Safety and Handling
Hydrofluoric acid is one of the highest-risk reagents in laboratory use. The fluoride ion penetrates skin without immediate pain and causes serious systemic toxicity. Dermal exposure requires urgent medical attention—even in the absence of a visible burn.
- Handle exclusively in a fume hood with adequate extraction
- Required PPE: neoprene or PVC fluoride-resistant gloves, full face shield, acid-resistant lab coat, safety footwear
- Calcium gluconate gel must be available at the workstation before any operation begins
- Store in polyethylene, PTFE or polypropylene containers—not glass
- Keep away from strong bases, alkali metals and other incompatible materials
Transport and Regulations
