Applications
Heating test tubes over a Bunsen burner, water bath, or sand bath. Also used to remove hot tubes from a centrifuge or heating block. Standard in secondary school, sixth form, and university teaching laboratories, as well as general chemistry labs.
Why Wood
Wood is a poor thermal conductor — protects the hand without requiring a heat-resistant glove for short operations. Does not react with common laboratory vapours and will not scratch the outer surface of the tube. No metal components to corrode in the presence of moisture or reagents.
