U-tube drying tube borosilicate 3.3

LBG borosilicate 3.3 glass drying tube in U-form. Designed to remove moisture from gas streams or isolate reactions from the surrounding atmosphere. Intercalated in the gas line or connected to the condenser outlet in synthesis setups.

How it works

Gas enters through one arm, passes through the desiccant packed in the lower bowl and exits dry through the opposite arm. The U-geometry forces the gas to travel the full length of the desiccant bed—delivering more thorough drying than a straight tube.

Desiccant loading and replacement is straightforward without dismantling the rest of the assembly.

Compatible desiccants

  • Silica gel — general purpose; colour-indicating grades available
  • Anhydrous calcium chloride — cost-effective, high absorption capacity
  • Molecular sieves 3Å or 4Å — for finer drying requirements
  • Calcium sulphate (Drierite) — suitable for inert gases and air

Applications

Used in inert gas lines (N₂, Ar) ahead of the reaction vessel. Also serves as a moisture trap in distillations, reflux setups or analytical instruments with water-sensitive detectors.

Standard in organic chemistry, inorganic synthesis and quality control laboratories.
